We thought we’d ask Laurie to talk to us about WINE! Join us at the Sinful Secret Supper on Thursday, September 13th, and you can ask her your Wine questions.

What was your first wine experience?

Boones Farm Strawberry Hill at the Drive-In movies…not kidding! There is nowhere to go but up from there:)

When did you become interested in Wine?

To answer this question, it is best talk about how I came to love wine in the first place…My love of wine began over a decade ago when I was working as a sales executive for a software company, traveling all over the country and working with some amazing people. One aspect of my job, which I enjoyed the most, was entertaining prospective clients-typically taking them out to dinner at the finest restaurants around the country for great food and wine. Sampling great wines was always a joy for me, but ordering from a wine list was another story. Sometimes when I was overwhelmed with a wine list I would ask the waiter for help and was greeted with a healthy dose of attitude.

To ensure this embarrassment would NEVER happen again, I began studying wine. I wanted to navigate a wine list and dazzle my clients unassisted. I began taking wine classes, attending wine dinners and reading as much as I could about wine. As my knowledge and confidence grew, I began to look forward to taking charge of the wine list. Ordering a great wine became a tool to impress key customers and to close deals.

I have since made a commitment to create events that help people connect with wine in a way that is approachable and fun, while creating opportunities for them to bond with each other. The most rewarding part of my job is that I can save my customers from the awkward moments I suffered with the wine list back in my software days. As The Wine Coach® I have armed thousands of corporations, associations and wine lovers with the knowledge and confidence to take charge of the wine list.

What is your best tip for ordering wine in a restaurant?

Ask for help and Go exploring! Some of the best bargains out there come from little known wine regions. Ever heard of Jumilla, Spain or Trentino, Italy? Chances are, most people haven’t, but these regions have fabulous wines that rival their more famous sister regions, such as Rioja and Tuscany. Start trying wines from some of these newcomers – you will not be disappointed!

When should you decant a wine?

There are two main reasons to decant wine. One is to remove the sediment, which is more often found in wines with ten or more years of bottle age and vintage ports. The other is to soften young tannic wines through aeration. While most wine professionals agree on the necessity of decanting to remove sediment the benefits of aeration are much more controversial. To have Laurie’s step by step instructions on decanting:
